Tips for a Great Family Photo Session
As a family photographer, I have shot tons of family photo sessions and I know what works and what doesn’t work. So, I want to share these tips with you to make sure you have the best experience possible.
Family Photography Tip #1 – My 3 Color Rule
I usually like to have three colors to round out my color palette. Two of the colors can be non-neutral colors. But the third one should be either tans and browns OR blacks and grays. This should give you plenty of outfits and will provide enough diversity to create some beautiful photos.
Family Photography Tip #2 – Think About Groupings
Just because we are doing family photos, it doesn’t mean that we can’t include some child portraits as well. Maybe you want a picture of just the girls, or just the kids. Maybe you have a brand new baby that you want featured a little extra. You are in charge of who is included in what photo. I will do my best to accommodate all of your desired wishes in the time frame allotted.
Family Photography Tip #3 – Full Bellies
Make sure all the kids have a full belly BEFORE putting them in your carefully chosen family photo shoot outfit. Kids are messy and they are also happier when they have food in their bellies.
Family Photography Tip #4 – Don’t Be Embarrassed
I have seen everything. Your kids are acting just like every other kid. Just be yourselves and the pictures will turn out amazing, full of life, full of what makes your family you! Even if things are chaotic, I take those opportunities capture candid photos of your beautiful family and some of those end up being my clients favorites.
